NASA is preparing for another space exploration program called "The Mars 2020 Rover Mission." The main goal of this program is to explore Mars and to answer the key questions about the potential for life. It provides opportunities to gather knowledge and introduce technologies that will solve the challenges of future human expedition to Mars.
This mission includes a Rover that is capable of drilling and collecting core samples like rocks and soil and set them aside in a "cache" on the surface of mars. A future mission could collect these samples and return to the surface of the earth. These samples can then be tested and studied by scientists in laboratories with special room-sized equipment. The testing methods include a way to produce oxygen from Martian atmosphere, identifying other resources, improving landing techniques, and characterizing weather, dust, and other environmental conditions that could affect future astronauts living and working on Mars.
Surprisingly, the mission takes the next step by searching for signs of past microbial life on Mars. The Mars 2020 Rover Mission is said to be timed for launch in July 2020 when Earth and Mars are in good positions relative to each other. This allows the rover to take less power to travel to Mars compared to other times.
Launch Date:
July 17 - Aug. 5,2020
Landing:
Feb. 18, 2021
Mission Duration:
At Least One Mars Year (About 687 days)
